Gasket joints are a family of materials that include products made by the paper mill process (latex in aqueous suspension) or by calender. Products made with the calender are more expensive but offer outstanding thermal and pressure holding characteristics. Differently, those produced by the paper mill method are cheaper and highly compressible, but have a narrower range of applications. In the past it was asbestos that was used to make gaskets. Instead, today this material has been replaced by glass and Kevlar fibers, which make it possible to produce gaskets suitable for a variety of needs: from less severe applications such as sewer or water mains to high-performance gaskets that can withstand high temperatures and aggressive fluids such as acids. To further expand the application range of gasket joints, the inner edge can be coated with a metal such as copper, resulting in bagged or coated gaskets. In this way, the joint is isolated from the aggressive fluid, allowing the material to work even in otherwise unsuitable situations.
